Mountain Dinara

Dinara is one of the more prominent mountains located near the border of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its Latin name is Adrian oros while the current name is suspected to be derived from the name of an ancient Illyrian tribe that lived on the eastern slopes of the mountain. It is best known for the fact that its name is the base for the name of a large mountain chain called the Dinaric Alps or Dinarides. The highest peaks are Troglav ("Three-head", 1913 m , 6276 ft. ) and Sinjal (1831 m , 6007 ft.). The peak called Dinara is shaped like a human head made of stone, and it happens to be the highest peak of Croatia. Dinara is host to an endemic species of rodent, the Balkan snow vole (Dolomys bogdanovi longipedis), known in Croatian as as the Dinarski miš ("Dinara mouse"). It is an endangered species.

DAY 01 The crew meets in Split, and from there we go to Dalmatinska zagora which is an hour drive away. We start the trek through the field of river Cetina under the mountain through the old villages. After two hours walk we come to the spring of river Cetina, where there is 9th century church nearby.

The springs of river Cetina are still a big mystery and their exact depth has not yet been established, but it has been known that a complex labyrinth of gateways, caves and pools is spread underneath. We continue our trek and to the first impressive mountain, with the Osman's fortress Glavaš. This whole area by the river Cetina had been overlooked from fortresses built on high places and they were used for overlooking the caravans and for defense.

The rest of the day we spend on the hardest part of our track – we climb to the house which is at the altitude of 1300 m , and it will take us about two hours to get there. The house is settled at the nice plain which was once a pastoral village. We can finally take a break and cook food. A night spent in this house is truly an amazing experience.

DAY 02 Today hike will be slightly shorter and not too difficult. The path goes through the highest Croatian peek, Sinjal (1831 m) which is two hours hike from the house. From the top you can see Troglav – the highest summit of Dinara which is located in Bosnia, and also Perućko lake, Kozjak mountain, and other Dinara's summits which rise up from Dinara along the way are also an interesting motives for taking pictures.

After decent from the top of Sinjal we walk through the meadows surrounded by the pine and oak forest. After a two hour walk we come to the mountain house located at the edge of a pine forest. We still have enough time for free activities before the night falls.

DAY 03 We get up to have a cup of tea or coffee and breakfast. Then we start our decent along Dinara towards Slap Krčić which falls into spring of river Krka which is located near Knin. Along the waterfalls there is Roman road which has been expanded later under Napoleon's administration. After taking pictures, we go towards the center of the town above which is the mid-century fortress from 10th century. After that we have a good bye toast and we leave for the bus or train station where we catch a ride for Split, Šibenik or Zagreb.
